The current education system in India is an implementation of the British rulers. 1854 Wood office laid the foundations of the current system of education in India. Before the arrival of the British in India, the education system was a private one.

With the introduction of the Office of wood known as the Magna Carta of Indian education, the situation changed. The main objective was to prepare for the operation of India Employees ..of local government. Under it the means of school education were the vernacular, whereas higher education was given in English only. British government began to fund Indian schools in need of help and thus gradually some of the schools became government-aided.

To develop the Education System in India as well as system of higher education, the government established the UGC in 1953. The main function of UGC has been to regulate the level and distribution of higher education in India. There was a marked progress in expanding higher education if we take into account the increase in higher education institutes in India.
